Forbidden Rice with Curried Lentils and Peas



The black rice that I used in this dish is called Forbidden rice.  It got its names because long ago, only the Emperor’s were allowed to eat it, or so the stories go.  It turns deep purple as you cook it, getting its color from anthocyanins, which is an antioxidant also found in other foods such as blueberries.  However, 10 spoonfuls of black rice has more antioxidants then 1 spoonful of blueberries.  It is high in iron, fiber, vitamin E (the beauty vitamin), and according the Chinese medicine, helps tone the blood and detoxify the stomach, kidneys and liver.



Eaten together with lentils, and you have a complete protein.  Lentils contain a ton of cholesterol lowering fiber, which also helps to maintain blood-sugar levels and helps prevent heart disease.  The fiber, with the help of a ton of iron, also provides slow burning energy  keeping you fuller longer.  Plus these fast cooking morsels of nutrition have magnesium, folate, protein, phosphorous  copper, potassium, and 2 b vitamins ALL with virtually no fat!  Add to that the fact that lentils are one of the only high protein legumes that are alkaline, and you really don’t need any other reason to add them to your diet …other then the fact that they are delicious.

Curried Lentils and Peas:

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbls vegetable broth
  • 1 crushed  garlic clove
  • 1 inch grated ginger
  • 1/2 an onion, diced
  • 1 cup coconut milk (the kind from the can, not the kind in the milk section in the grocery store)
  • 1 cup frozen green peas
  • 1 tbls cumin
  • 1 tbls coriander
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • pinch of salt


Cook the lentils in the water, covered,  20 minutes.  In a separate pan, healthy saute the garlic, ginger, and onion in the vegetable broth 3 minutes.  Add the spices, stirring occasionally to make sure they don’t burn, 1 minute. Add the coconut milk and stir, 2 more minutes.   Now add the cooked lentils to the coconut milk mixture, and the peas, stir to combine, cooking 2 minutes or until the peas have thawed.  Season with salt and serve over forbidden rice.  (You can also serve this more traditionally over white or brown rice)
